Downloading doesn’t hurt business: Canadian Record Industry Association study

March 22nd, 2006 lance No comments

Ha, finally people are starting to get it! People are discovering more music and buying it after finding it and listening to it!

http://www.open-files.com/redac/redac_open-files_com/Kademlia/P2P-Kad.jpg

New research says music downloading (or “P2P,” peer-to-peer file swapping) might not be the record industry’s death knell after all. And while that’s an interesting idea, the real surprise is where the new research is coming from: the recording industry itself.

Canadian military to probe sale of gear on eBay

March 18th, 2006 lance No comments

Not good for our troops over seas.

The Canadian military has launched an investigation after some of its military clothing and equipment turned up for sale on the Internet, a spokesman for the Department of National Defence has said. Several pieces of the military’s specialised camouflage gear were, until recently, up for sale on eBay, igniting concerns about the security of Canadian troops. The items were removed from the site. “They appear to be Canadian forces uniforms or equipment,” said Capt. Mark Giles, a member of the military’s National Investigation Service in Ottawa, noting the military plans to contact eBay about the matter. Some pieces of the camouflage uniform, currently being worn by Canadian troops in Afghanistan, were being sold for just a few hundred dollars, domestic media reported. It is illegal for anyone but military personnel to own or wear uniforms being used in active duty.

YES!

NBC said that it will make 10 web-only episodes of popular comedy “The Office” during the summer, when the show is not on the air.

In a news release, the network said the “webisodes” will focus on a mystery facing the accounting staff of the Dunder-Mifflin paper company.

Self-destructing flash drive

March 16th, 2006 lance No comments

This is what everyone should have!

We know there are plenty of “secure” flash drives out there, but face it: if someone is really determined to get at your data, they’ll probably figure out a way. That’s where Kingston’s Data Traveler Elite Privacy Edition comes in. The 4GB flash drive encrypts all data with 128-bit AES, and then adds an extra layer of security: a self destruct feature. If anyone tries to use a brute-force attack to guess your password, the drive will automatically erase itself after 25 wrong guesses. Of course, if you have a really easy password, and a data thief can figure it out in under 25 guesses, you’re out of luck. For the rest of us, this could be a good solution for keeping on-the-go info out of the wrong hands.

Tim Horton’s IPO

March 13th, 2006 lance No comments

I might buy the stock if I can get my hands on a few. The chance is slim to none. I think the first day will see alot of pin action and the price will skyrocket with demand. Everyone wants a piece. I would not hold this stock as a longterm play. I read this the other day, right from the co-founder…

“I’ve always believed Canada eventually will be saturated,” Joyce said. “The future opportunities in the United States are tremendous, but that is a very competitive market.”

I don’t think Tim Horton’s has what it takes to break into the US market. Here is another interesting quote.

Tim Hortons now has 2,600 stores in Canada and 290 in 10 U.S. states, mostly in the Northeast. The company now has plans to increase the store count to 4,000 in Canada and 500 in the United States.

I smell saturated Donuts ;)
